English
A cold wind blows across my face My cheeks go numb, my blood vessels constrict The whirlwind howls The snowstorm whirls I see the snow How it drifts Whirls in the air The sky breaks through the never-ending snowfall The landscape moves swiftly Changing colors in greyish white Black lines flicker past I lie in the sled I hear the reindeer's clicking hooves The puffing muzzle The sound of the skis I travel to sleepy mountain The wind's voice rocks me to sleep Snow settles like a white duvet upon the world Suddenly I wake up from the pain My body seems to open up, to cleave The pain increases to its worst I am cleaved like a piece of wood The pain remains Retracts Wears off I open my eyes again The light is blinding Still on the road I summon strength from my body Must bear the pain It burns like fire inside of me The lower back The abdomen The hips I'm shaking with fear I'm tormented by the pain The sled thumps against the ice A searing pain The pain burns inside me There is no end I try to follow my body's lead The uneven shape of the landscape Piercing pain My body is contracting, then tears apart a little more A movement without end I hear my heart pounding in my chest I feel the tears streaming Stings on ice cold cheeks

Life is here, can you feel it? So close I can breathe you This is the greatest moment You were the most precious gift My body is in pain. My heart is pounding in my chest I've never felt like this before and I just want to scream out loud There is no way back, no way to stop it I am like a lonely boat on a stormy sea Life is here, can you feel it? So close, I can sense you This is the greatest moment You were the most precious gift Breathing through my labour Tears are running down my face, fear is coming over me No one can understand I'm torn in half I'm trying to handle the pain wishing it will all be fine I find a moment of peace when the labours calm down I drift between asleep and awake floating in the air Above the vast moors behind the high mountains The blue sky is all around me, glowing beautifully Life is here, can you feel it? So close I can sense you This is the greatest moment That heart beating within me was you I wake up from sleep when dawn breaks I'm working through the wave of contractions, mustn't be afraid now Breathing gets easier and my strength is renewed I know you're so close now, life is dawning

I sat down by your bed Looked upon you my love Deep down in my heart I thought there rests my darling Alas my poor girl You were so young Then you caused me To grieve until death The wind accompanied The waves roared across the ocean Grief guided me To sing to you thus Oh dearest, oh beloved When I remember you Blood flows in my chest Don't you ever forget me

The wings of the butterfly are fluttering within me So light I can barely feel it The seed that Máttaráhká got Created of it a foetus, a baby girl An invisible soul has started to grow in the womb Floating in its own space The heart of the butterfly is beating within me So silent I can barely hear it A tiny frail foetus that Sáráhkká brought Turning inside of me like a wave The hidden foetus kicking within me Hearing voices from far away on the outside The hands of the foetus are clutching and waving Opening its eyes for the very first time The head of the butterfly is striving downwards Must leave mother's warm body Time has come for the first battle For the child who is ready to be born The child of the sun is flying over the mountains Learning the traditions from the forefathers Blessed child, which is your path? Let your heart guide you

Tule luoja turvakseni, Avukseni armollinen Näissä töissä työlähissä, Ajoissa ani kovissa! Päästä piika pintehestä, Vaimo vatsan vääntehestä, Ettei vaivoihin vajoisi, Tuskihinsa tummeneisi! Niin perille päästyänsä Itse tuon sanoiksi virkki: "Henkeäs hyvä hevoinen, Huokoas vetäjä varsa, Kylylöyly löyhäytä, Sauna lämpöinen lähetä, Jotta huono hoivan saisin, Avun ange tarvitseisin" Henkäsi hyvä hevoinen, Huokasi vetäjä varsa Vatsan kautta vaivaloisen; Min hevonen hengähtävi, On kuin löyly lyötäessä, Viskattaessa vetonen Marjatta matala neiti Pyhä piika pikkarainen Kylpi kylyn kyllältänsä Vatsan löylyn vallaltansa; Teki tuonne pienen poian, Latoi lapsensa vakaisen Heinille hevoisen luoksi, Sorajouhen soimen päähän.
English
Come thou to my aid, Creator, To my aid, O thou most gracious, In this anxious time of labour, In this time of hardest labour. Free the damsel from her burden, From her pains release the woman, That she perish not in torment, May not perish in her anguish. When at length her journey ended, Then she spoke the words which follow: "O thou good horse, breathe upon me, O thou draught-foal, snort upon me, Breathe a vapour-bath around me, Send thou warmth throughout the bathroom, That relief may reach the sufferer, For the need is very pressing." Then the good horse breathed upon her, And the draught-foal snorted on her, Over all her suffering body. When the horse desisted breathing, Steam was spread throughout the stable, Like the steam of boiling water. Marjatta the hapless maiden, She, the holy little maiden, Bathed her in a bath sufficient, Till she had relieved her suffering, And a little boy was born her, And a sinless child was given, On the hay in horses' stable, On the hay in horses' manger.

Travelled through the blackened streams 'Til the utter end of time Beyond the silent words of dreams Rested the little life of mine Tears had stained my soul That floated on the surface Fear had taken its toll The storm in me roared with purpose Sáráhkká — Protector Sáráhkká — From the embers you came Sáráhkká — Helper Sáráhkká — You cleaved life Pain tore at my heartstrings In the cold night Rode through healing winds The water so bright Longing pushed you out of me The body I bore to receive Mother of Fire sat with thee Carefully she us cleaved Sáráhkká — Protector Sáráhkká — From the embers you came Sáráhkká — Helper Sáráhkká — You cleaved life
